Music
"A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement." - National Curriculum 2014
What does Music look like at Barkisland School?
As part of our broad and balanced curriculum, at Barkisland, we are committed to provide our children with a range of opportunities to become successful musicians. We know that music provides the children with creative exposure and allows them to become expressive, confident individuals. Through our music curriculum, the children are supported with their learning in a safe, nurturing environment in order to develop a sense of resilience and self-belief.
Our Curriculum
Here at Barkisland, we follow a music scheme called 'Charanga', which enables all children to access a wide range of genres, teaching them musical skills such as improvisation, composition and enabling them to develop fantastic listening skills. The children are taught music every week by their class teacher following this scheme and develop the skills needed to perform a repertoire of musical pieces, both vocal and instrumental.
In Key Stage 2, the children receive instrumental lessons on a half termly basis by our music lead, Miss Reynolds. Throughout their time in Key Stage 2, the children learn how to successfully play the recorder, ukelele and a variety of different brass instruments, as well as apply and develop their knowledge of reading musical notation.
Private Instrumental Lessons
Here at Barkisland, we are pleased to be able to facilitate instrumental lessons. Through Calderdale Music Trust, pupils can undertake private music lessons on a whole host of instruments.
