Hola! Welcome to the Year 5 class page. 

Year 5 is an exciting and busy year, filled with new experiences, interesting topics and plenty of opportunities for children to develop their confidence and independence.

Our class is taught by Mrs Wilde on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and by Mrs Nicoll on Tuesday. We are also supported by Miss Grady for three mornings each week, as we share her support with Class 6.

Our learning

Throughout the year, the children explore a wide range of fascinating topics. These include:

• Space

• Rainforests

• Vikings and Anglo-Saxons

• Rivers, canals and railways

• The Ancient Maya

• Plants and animals

These topics allow the children to build their knowledge, ask thoughtful questions and make connections across different areas of the curriculum. They will take part in practical activities, discussions, research, creative tasks and independent learning.

One of the highlights of Year 5 is our one-day residential visit to Little Deer Wood. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to try new activities, work as a team and develop their resilience and independence—all while making some fantastic memories with their friends.

Physical Education

Our PE days are:

• Wednesday – indoor PE

• Thursday – outdoor PE

Please make sure that your child comes to school wearing the correct PE kit on these days. If your child finds it difficult to remove their earrings independently, it would be helpful if earrings were not worn to school on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

As outdoor PE will usually take place in a range of weather conditions, children should have suitable clothing and footwear for the time of year.

Talking Homework

Talking Homework will be uploaded on or before Wednesday each week. This provides families with an opportunity to talk together about the learning taking place in school and helps children to rehearse their ideas, vocabulary and explanations before using them in the classroom.

Please encourage your child to discuss the questions and activities with someone at home. There is no expectation for parents to teach the topic—the most important part is the conversation!
